There is a tutorial in the American Journal of Speech Language Pathology, put together by a multidisciplinary team in Australia’s Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, New South Wales, to support speech-language pathologists undertaking speech and sound assessments of children who speak languages that are not shared with their SLP (McLeod S, et al., Am J Speech Lang Pathol. 2017 Aug 15;26(3):691-708. doi: 10.1044/2017_AJSLP-15-0161).
Drawing on professional expertise and research evidence, this is an effort to provide a comprehensive way of addressing referral, case history, Speech assessment, analysis, diagnosis, and goal setting in light of the SLP’s cultural competence and preparation for working with interpreters and multicultural support workers, while also managing organizational and government barriers to culturally competent practice.
This tutorial contains a hypothetical case study of an English-speaking SLP’s assessment of a multilingual Cantonese- and English-speaking 4-year-old boy. Resources are offered throughout the tutorial.
